Retainful ensures that a customer’s consent is appropriately obtained before they are added to your email list. This process helps you stay compliant with data privacy regulations such as GDPR and CAN-SPAM.

The settings allow you to customize how consent is requested, typically through options like checkboxes, explicit consent statements, or subscription confirmations on popups or during automated workflows.

Single Opt-in (Default Setting)

  • In a single opt-in process, a customer’s email address is added to your mailing list as soon as they complete the signup form. There is no need for the customer to confirm their subscription.

To access Single Opt-in settings, follow these steps:

  • Go to the Retainful Dashboard.

  • Click on Settings at the bottom left corner.

  • Navigate to Account settings → Emails → Opt-in settings.

  • It will be in Default Single opt-in

Example: A customer visits your website and fills out a signup form to receive your newsletter. As soon as they submit the form, their email address is added to your mailing list, and they start receiving your newsletters.

Implicit and Explicit Consent in the Signup Form

  • Implicit Consent: This is assumed consent. If a customer provides their email address but does not explicitly opt out of marketing communications, it is considered that they have given implicit consent.

This is how it displays implicit consent.

  • Explicit Consent: This requires a clear action by the customer to indicate their consent, such as ticking a checkbox to receive marketing communications.

This is how it displays for the explicit consent.

Double Opt-in

Double opt-in is a two-step process for new signups, which ensures that your email list only contains valid email addresses. It is particularly useful when you want to ensure that the email address is not only valid but also belongs to the individual who entered it. This helps prevent situations where people enter someone else’s email address without their consent.

To access Double opt-in settings, follow these steps:

  • Go to the Retainful Dashboard.

  • Click on Settings at the bottom left corner.

  • Navigate to Account settings → Emails → Opt-in settings.

  • Select the Double Opt-in

  • Customize the double Opt-in template

  • Click on Save

Note:

  1. The customer fills out your signup form and is then sent a confirmation email.

  2. The customer must click the confirmation link in this email to verify their email address and be added to your email list.

Example: A customer visits your website and fills out a signup form to receive your newsletter. They then receive a confirmation email with a link to verify their email address. Only after clicking this link is the customer added to your email list and starts receiving your newsletters.

Retainful's consent settings make sure new contacts from popups and automation are added with permission. By prioritizing customer consent, Retainful helps businesses maintain trust, adhere to data privacy regulations, and build a more engaged and reliable email subscriber base.
