How to ensure GDPR compliance - Marketing Consent

In this article, we will discuss marketing consent, a crucial aspect that involves obtaining explicit permission from customers to send them marketing communications.

What is Marketing Consent?

Marketing consent refers to the explicit permission given by customers to receive marketing emails. This is a crucial aspect of customer data privacy and is mandated by regulations such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

  • Implicit Consent: This is assumed consent. If a customer provides their email address but does not explicitly opt out of marketing communications, it is considered that they have given implicit consent.

  • Explicit Consent: This requires a clear action by the customer to indicate their consent, such as ticking a checkbox to receive marketing communications.

To enable the Marketing Consent on the checkout page, follow these steps:

  1. Log in to your site.

  2. Navigate to Woocommerce → Retainful → Settings.

  3. Set Marketing consent to Explicit.

  1. Set Consent field position - Choose whether you want the consent field to appear Below the Email address field or below the terms and conditions section.

  2. Enter the Compliance message that you wish to display on the checkout page.

Save the settings:

  1. Click Save to apply the changes.

  2. Here is how users view the Compliance message on the checkout page.

Note: Under GDPR, it is mandatory to inform the users when we track their cart activity in real-time.

Buyer Accepts Marketing Rule In Automation:

When you configure Explicit Marketing Consent in WooCommerce and apply the Buyer Accepts Marketing rule in your abandoned cart recovery or any post-purchase automation, only those customers who have explicitly subscribed to receive emails will be included in these workflows. This ensures that your marketing communications are targeted and sent only to those customers who have expressed their interest.

To access Buyer Accepts Marketing Rule, follow these steps:

  1. Go to Abandoned Cart Automation or any Post-Purchase section.

  2. Set the trigger rule to Buyer accepts marketing - > is -> accepted.

  3. Click on Add Rule.

With this rule, only customers who have subscribed to receive mail will enter into this workflow.

For example, if a customer abandons a product by entering their email ID and selecting the checkbox to subscribe to the mail, they will enter into the workflow. If the same customer abandons another product but doesn’t select the checkbox, they won’t enter into the workflow.
